Manzano Angus began in 1993 when Bill and Lisa Gardner purchased three pairs from Cochise Angus dispersal in Arizona and ten head from Bradley 3 Angus of Memphis, Texas. In subsequent years bred heifers were purchased from N Bar Land and Cattle in Montana. Since then the herd has expanded to include two ranches and over 200 registered cows. On Tuesday, March 20, 2012, Manzano Angus will hold its 16th Annual Bull Sale at the ranch near Estancia, New Mexico.

Through the use of extensive AI and some embryo transfer Manzano Angus aims to produce low-input, easy fleshing cattle that can thrive in the tough and varied climate of the southwest. This requires moderate framed, moderate milking cows who can calve unassisted and have exceptional udder structure. The Manzano Angus herd has a strong EXT base and, as a result, is fertile, has excellent udders and strong growth. The more recent addition of DHD Traveler 6807 influence has added calving ease and fleshing ability to the herd. Many Ohlde Cattle Company bulls have been used including Emblazon, Echelon, Homer, Legend and Paxton.

By demanding efficient cows that fit the arid southwestern environment the Gardner's strive to breed a unique type of cattle; Angus cattle built on function, not on numbers.
